At 23 years old, I was all about life in the fast lane. Then one autumn day, I made a decision to follow Jesus. My life changed, but not overnight. In fact, I had no idea what to do next. I didn’t have any Christian friends and didn’t know anything about the Bible. So for a couple of months, I did the only thing I did know. I drove my rusty ‘71 Dodge Charger forty miles every weekend to this cool church.
Then one day after service, a guy tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around and met Larry, who asked, “Do you want to go a Christian concert with some of us tonight?” Three thoughts swept through my mind. Who is this guy? What is a Christian concert? And why is asking me? Outwardly, I replied, “Sure.”Turns out Larry was a Small Group leader. This is the first I’d ever heard of a Small Group, but I liked the idea, and joined that night. In that group I learned how to follow Jesus. Every area of my life began to change. Some things quickly, others slowly. And Larry became a lifelong best friend.
Looking back, I wonder where I’d be if Larry hadn’t tapped me on the shoulder or if I didn’t say “Sure.” If you are not in a Small Group right now, can I ‘tap you on the shoulder’? Whether you’re a new Christian, a long-time Christ-follower, or somewhere in between, a Small Group will bring you to new levels in your relationship with Christ. So, take a step. Begin the journey. It will change your life.
